The Doctor will Text you Now

In 2019, I had a major surgery removing 9 fibroids from my uterus and abdomen and endometriosis from my bladder, small and large bowel, stomach, and a few other areas.

I was due for a follow up with my gyn surgeon.

A Simple Appointment…

Her practice had been bought first by private equity and then a large NY health system. I googled her name and clicked on the “book an appointment”.

It took me to a page to fill in my information and someone from the office would call me back. I received the first call two days later and a voicemail instructed me to call their office. I called the number provided which wasn’t the office - but an automated line instructing me to leave a message.

And on and on it went.

An Endless Phone Tree of Frustration

This was followed by multiple subsequent calls where I navigated endless phone trees, was put on hold for interminable minutes with irritating hold music, and repeatedly had to explain my complex medical situation to different, often disconnected, staff members.

What promised digital convenience quickly devolved into a frustrating labyrinth of phone tag and bureaucratic hurdles. Each unanswered call and dead-end voicemail added to the mental load, turning a simple, essential post-operative follow-up into an exhausting administrative task.

And on and on it went, a stark reminder of how challenging it can be for patients to simply access the care they need in a system increasingly prioritizing volume over patient experience.

This relentless pursuit of an appointment became a stark reminder of how difficult it can be for patients to simply access the care they need, even when they're highly motivated and medically literate.

Why Patients Deserve Better

This experience, which felt far too common in the increasingly corporatized healthcare landscape, underscored precisely why I designed my own practice with ease of communication as a cornerstone.
